Maddy is biracial half African American, half Japanese. Later, Madeline finds out that her episode in Hawaii was caused by myocarditis, not SCID. Olly’s family later moves from LA to NYC to escape their drunk father. After she recovers, she tries to stop thinking about Olly because he represents the possibilities, something she will never have. During the trip, Madeline gets severely sick and is brought to the ER. On a whim, Madeline books a flight with Olly to Hawaii as a getaway from home. When Pauline finds out, she fires Carla and replaces her with a new nurse who tries to separate the two. Carla starts to sneak Olly into Madeline’s house so they could meet in person, something Pauline, Madeline’s mother, would never allow.
Using the means of online communication, they form a bond and start to develop feelings for one another. When a boy named Olly moves next door into the neighborhood, he catches Madeline's eye. She is cared for by her nurse, Carla, and mother, Pauline. In the beginning of the book, we are introduced to her life inside her own bubble, at the mercy of her illness.
